Reflection 4

As all RUB colleges rely on the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), specifically Moodle, as their learning management system, it is essential for faculty members to learn and utilize all the relevant features it offers. One key reason why faculty may not use the VLE effectively is their limited knowledge of its functionalities. I feel privileged to have attended this course, which covers important features and settings on the VLE.

We learned how to add a running welcome text, often referred to as a 'marquee,' to make the VLE page more engaging for users. Another valuable feature we explored was changing the course format from 'section-wise' to 'weekly,' something I was previously unaware of. Additionally, we learned how to back up course content, enabling us to reuse materials in future semesters. This backup feature is particularly advantageous, as it allows for the quick re-uploading of all activities and content when teaching the same course again. Beyond backups, we also covered how to import and export files. While I had previously imported notes between my own modules, I discovered that this feature also allows importing materials from other modules within the college. Many faculty members are unaware of this functionality and resort to the time-consuming process of downloading and re-uploading materials for each course.

We also learned how to create quizzes and adjust their settings. While I had explored this feature independently before, the course introduced me to new concepts, such as creating fill-in-the-blank questions using the CLOZE format, which I had not encountered previously. Another significant tool we explored was H5P, which enables the creation of interactive content. Although I had heard of H5P before, I had never used it. Through the session, I realized its potential for creating interactive slides, quizzes, and videos. I plan to integrate this tool into my lessons moving forward.

Among the many features, the one I found most impressive was the 'Workshop' activity. Until now, I was unaware that the VLE included a feature that allows students to assess and grade their peers' work. This functionality not only promotes accountability among students but also reduces the assessment workload for instructors by delegating peer assessments. I plan to implement this feature in the coming semester for activities such as assignments, class discussions, and more.

The course also highlighted how VLE can embed various interactive tools and resources directly, such as Nearpod, blogs, and SCORM platforms. This eliminates the need for students to manage multiple accounts and passwords, as all resources can be accessed with a single VLE login. This integration significantly streamlines the learning process for students.

The session was incredibly insightful, and I am excited to implement these tools and features to enhance my teaching and my students’ learning experiences
