A Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) plays a crucial role in modern education by providing a flexible and accessible platform for teaching and learning. It allows students and teachers to interact beyond the constraints of physical classrooms, enabling learning to take place anytime and anywhere. With features such as online lectures, assignments, assessments, and discussion forums, VLEs cater to diverse learning needs, making education more inclusive and adaptable.
Additionally, they offer a centralized space for managing resources, tracking progress, and maintaining communication, which enhances organization and efficiency in the learning process. In today’s technology-driven world, VLEs are particularly important for fostering digital literacy and preparing students for the demands of the 21st century. They promote self-paced learning, enabling students to revisit materials, access immediate feedback, and learn at their own speed. VLEs also facilitate collaboration through tools like shared documents and group projects, encouraging teamwork and communication skills.
Moodle, one of the most widely used Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs), was developed in 2002 by Martin Dougiamas as an open-source platform to support collaborative learning. Universities in Bhutan adopted Moodle to modernize their educational systems, moving from traditional teaching methods to approaches that align with the demands of 21st-century skills. Moodle's user-friendly design and customizable features have empowered both educators and students, transforming the way education is delivered in Bhutan.
However, many tutors face challenges in fully utilizing Moodle’s features due to a lack of training. To make the best use of this tool, it is essential to provide proper training for tutors, ensuring they can effectively incorporate its features into their teaching practices.
