Possible Challenges of Using Educational Technology in Bhutan.

While educational technology has numerous core benefits, I often see some challenges in the context of Bhutan.

  1. Unequal opportunities: Some schools may lack sufficient technological infrastructure, such as computers, tablets, or other devices. This can hinder the effective use of educational technology, especially in under-resourced schools and institutions. There may be differences in access to technology between urban and rural students, as well as among different socio-economic groups. This digital divide can exacerbate educational inequality, leaving certain groups at a disadvantage.
  2. Digital Literacy: While technology is increasingly being integrated into education, there remains a gap in digital literacy among students and teachers. Many educators may not be fully trained in using technology effectively, leading to challenges in maximizing its potential.
  3. Dependency on Technology: Over-reliance on technology can lead to a lack of face-to-face interaction and often a decline in communication and social skills. Students may also become too dependent on technology for learning, potentially reducing their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities as most of us are now relying on generative AI to do most of our work.
  4. Cost: The initial cost of acquiring technology and maintaining it can be a significant burden for schools, particularly in rural areas. For some families, the cost of internet access and devices may also be prohibitive, creating disparities in access to educational technology.
